ADHD and Autism Evaluations Middlesex NJ
Answers you've been waiting for. A process that actually respects you.
You've spent years explaining yourself to teachers, doctors, partners, and employers, and still feel like something fundamental hasn't been named. You work harder than anyone around you. You've built systems and workarounds just to function at the level everyone else seems to reach without trying. Underneath all of that effort is a question: Is there a reason for this?
Comprehensive ADHD and autism evaluations are available at True Reflections Mental Health Services in Middlesex, NJ for children as young as 2.5, teens, and adults who've wondered their whole lives. I'm Janine Kelly, LCSW, and I hold specialized certifications in neurodiversity-affirming assessment, including the C-NDAAP, ADHD-CCSP, and ASDCS credentials. Services are offered in-person in Middlesex, NJ and virtually for residents of New Jersey and Florida. There is no waitlist. True Reflections Mental Health Services is an out-of-network provider, which means a Superbill is provided after each appointment so you can submit for potential reimbursement through your insurance.
What you're actually looking for when you search for an evaluation
Most people who come in for an evaluation aren't looking for a label. They want an explanation that finally fits, one that makes sense of why they're so depleted, why relationships feel harder than they should, why they've been told they're smart and capable and yet can't hold things together the way other people seem to.
The depletion that comes from compensating without a diagnosis, why exhaustion persists even when you're trying your hardest, is one of the most common things clients describe before they come in.
A clear diagnosis gives you something real to work with. For children, it can mean finally getting the support they need rather than being misread as difficult or inattentive. For adults, it can shift years of self-blame into something more accurate and open the door to accommodations at work or school.
Who comes in for an evaluation
I offer ADHD evaluations starting at age 4, including adults. Autism assessments begin at age 2.5 and extend through adulthood.
I have extensive training in identifying masking, particularly in girls and women, a population that has historically been overlooked in ADHD and autism testing for adult women and often arrives at evaluation having already spent years being misdiagnosed.
For those who've wondered for years whether something has been missed, getting clarity through an evaluation rather than continuing to adapt without answers is often what makes late autism diagnosis for women one of the most searched paths to my practice.
What the evaluation actually looks like
The process begins with an intake appointment that is conversational, not clinical. There's space to talk about your background, your daily life, what's hard, and what you're hoping to understand. For children, this first appointment is with parents only.
Testing sessions cover sensory processing, social-emotional functioning, memory, language, communication, executive functioning, cognition, and adaptive behavior. I select assessment tools based on your specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all battery.
The final appointment is a feedback session where we review results together in real time. I explain findings in plain language, answer every question you have, and talk through practical next steps. A comprehensive ADHD and autism evaluation involves four appointments and produces a 20 to 30 page report with recommendations for home, school, and work. Fees begin at $2,600 for a diagnosis letter and $3,600 for a comprehensive report, with payment plans available.
The approach I bring to every evaluation
I'm neurodivergent myself and received my own diagnosis later in life, something that shapes the way I sit with every person who comes through my door.
I hold specialized certifications in neurodiversity-affirming ADHD and autism evaluations, including the C-NDAAP, ADHD-CCSP, and ASDCS credentials. I treat ADHD and autism as natural variations in neurology, not deficits to correct. The goal of this evaluation is understanding, not judgment.
My office in Middlesex is designed with sensory comfort in mind. Lighting and noise can be adjusted, a range of seating is available, and sensory regulation tools are on hand throughout the space.
What happens after you have an answer
A diagnosis opens a door rather than closing a chapter. Some clients come for an evaluation alone; others find that therapy for adults with ADHD is the natural next step once they have a clear picture of what they're working with.
A diagnosis in adulthood can bring up grief, identity questions, and relief all at once, which is why support for adults navigating a late ADHD or autism diagnosis is offered alongside evaluations, not as a separate track.
Questions people ask before booking
How do I know if I actually need an evaluation or if I'm just overwhelmed?
If you've been managing symptoms for years through sheer effort and still feel like something is off, an evaluation can tell you whether there's a clinical explanation. Overwhelm and ADHD can look similar from the outside, but a comprehensive evaluation distinguishes between them by assessing attention, executive functioning, sensory processing, and adaptive behavior across multiple contexts. You don't need to be certain before you reach out.
Is it too late to get evaluated as an adult?
No. I evaluate adults regularly, including clients who spent decades managing without a diagnosis. An adult diagnosis in New Jersey can support workplace accommodation requests, inform treatment decisions, and reframe a lifetime of experiences that never quite made sense.
What if I'm not sure whether I have ADHD, autism, or both?
The comprehensive evaluation assesses both, and the tools I use are selected based on your specific profile. You don't need to arrive with a hypothesis. The evaluation is designed to figure out what's actually going on, not to confirm what you already suspect.
What does the first appointment look like?
The first appointment is an intake session lasting 45 to 50 minutes. For adult evaluations, it's a conversation with you. For child evaluations, it's a conversation with parents only. My goal is to understand your background and day-to-day experience well enough to select the right assessment tools for the sessions that follow. It is not a test.
